Gulliver accepted an offer from a Captain Pritchard to sail to the South Sea on a ship called the Antelope. On their way to the East Indies, they were hit by a storm near Van Dieman’s Land (Tasmania.) Their ship was driven onto a rock and split in two. Gulliver and several of the crew made their way onto one of the ship’s boats, which they rowed away from the wreck. The boat was soon swamped by a huge wave, and Gulliver found himself swimming. Eventually, he wound up on the shore of an island, and laid down to take a nap. When he awoke, he was bound to the ground by “slender ligatures.” When he struggled to get up, he found himself surrounded by humans “not six inches high.” He was in Lilliput.
