Helen loved the country and the outdoor sports. she had learned to row and swim as a little girl and during the summer which she spent in Wrentham, Massachusetts, she almost lived in her boat. nothing gave her greater joy than to take her friends out rowing when they visited her during that time. she could not guide the boat really well, but when someone sat on the stern she managed the rudder then she could row. it was great fun for her to row without the rudder, guided by the scent of watergrasses and lillies as well as the bushes on the shore. she could go skimming over the waves and feel the surge of the water awaken her spirits. she also enjoyed canoeing but her favourite amusement was sailing.
