Helen loved the country and outdoor sports. She had learned to swim and row as a little girl and during the summer which she spent at Wrentham, Massachusetts, she almost lived in her boat. Nothing gave her greater joy than to take her friends out rowing when they visited her during that time. She could not guide the boat very well but if someone sat on the stern and managed the rudder then she could row. It was great fun for her sometimes to row without the rudder, guided by the scent of watergrasses and lilies as well as the bushes on the shore. She would go skimming over the waves and feel the surge of the water awaken her spirits. She also enjoyed canoeing but her favourite amusement was sailing.
