Helen Keller's love for books and reading was a slow process. She first read in May 1887. When Helen visited Boston, she spend time at the library in the institution and she found herself wandering from one book to another. With the help of Miss Sullivan she read ‘Little Lord Fauntleroy,’ and this became Helen's “companion” all through her childhood years.
She went on to read many books like 'Little Women', 'Wild Animals I Have Known' and ‘The Jungle Book’ and ‘Wild ‘Animals I Have Known’ as animals were of much interest to her. She enjoyed Greek literature and Lliad made Greece feel like “paradise” to her. She felt that to understand poetry, one needed only a heart and not an interpreter. Among Shakespearian work, she was impressed by Macbeth and King Lear. But, the book she loved the most was the Bible, as it gave her much joy to read it.
Apart from literature, Helen also loved history and the first book that impressed upon her a sense to value history was Swinton's "World's History". Among French writers, she liked Rachine and Moliere the best. Helen however called literature her "Utopia", because she said she felt no barrier to her senses when she read works of literature.
