Think of DMA as a co-processor that is used to quickly transfer data between main memory and peripherals without the intervention of the CPU. DMA essentially freezes the CPU, disconnecting it from the memory and I/O busses, so that specialized data-moving hardware can transfer data between memory and peripherals
