India has elections conducted at 3 levels - central, state and local. We follow the Westminster system modeled from England. The central and state governments are elected every 5 years. The elections are quite similar to how your school elections happen. Different people register to be contestants after paying a fee. On the election day everyone from that locality votes. The person winning the most votes wins the election.
