Answer:

On the Great Plains, a great amount of longhorn cattle lived in the 19 century. There was a big supply of cattle but not a big demand due to lack of population. Meanwhile in the East Coast existed a big demand of cattle but few supply. That's why cattle ranchers wanted to sell their cattle in the East Coast. They could get more money for their products. They hired cowhands in order to take their cattle from their ranches to the railheads that were sometimes hundreds of miles away from their property. This was a very hard job to do, also there were a lot of dangers for the cattle.

Not long after the Civil war, many residents near the Great Plains realized that vast fortunes can be made out of trading wild cattles and wild horses. The long drives were critical in this business because without them, the products will not be able to reach the market where they will be sold.
