In addition to the other answers given, I’d like to add that the enfield rifle catridge was not the main cause of revolt or the great rising of 1857.Rather it was the spark which led to the ignition of the revolt.

•The british east India company had angered and upset all the classes of people,be it farmers,Indian soldiers and even rulers.

•The farmers were burdened by the pressure of mounting taxes,those who didn’t pay were punished.Further,the unrest continued because of the Doctrine of Lapse proposed by Lord Dalhousie. It stated that rulers not having any heir to the throne’s kingdom would be annexed by the company.

•This unrest was fueled and came out of control,when the company introduced the new catridge,it was rumoured to be coated with animal fat,which hurted the religious sentiments of the hindu and muslim soldiers.

The rest as we all know is History.
