Our first atmosphere was probably hydrogen and helium, but these gases were lost to space because they don't have enough mass for our planet's gravity to hold, and the internal structure of the Earth had yet to differentiate, so there was no magnetosphere, so no Van Allen Belt, hence no barrier to the "solar wind" which would have just blown these early atmosphere away. Only after differentiation and the spinning of the core began could the heavier gases be maintained.
