Unification of Germany (1866-1871):

The first major step towards the unification of Germany was summoning the Frankfurt Parliament in the church of St. Paul on 18th May 1848. With the help of the Prussian army and bureaucracy the chief minister of Prussia Otto Von Bismarck carried out the unification. The rest of the steps towards the German unification were -
- Monarchy and the landlords of Prussia oppressed the liberal initiatives of rebuilding the nation. Since then Prussia lead to unify Germany.
- Bismarck's concept that the unification of Germany could only be achieved by princes not by common people, made him set his aim to merge Prussia into Germany. In 1867 he became the chancellor of northern federation.
- In a brief period of seven years Bismarck succeeded in sowing the seeds of unification of Germany by fighting three wars with Austria, Denmark and France respectively.
- The victory of Prussia ended these wars and completed the process of German unification. The king of Prussia, Kaiser William I was crowned as the emperor of Germany in the Royal Palace of Versailles on 18th January 1871. This symbolized the birth of united Germany.
