Sedimentary rocks are made of rockor mineral fragments deposited in layers by water, wind or ice at the earth's surface. Individual grains, or clasts, are bound together by compaction or cementation, or both. Clastic rocks are made from weathered rock debris.

The three main types, or classes, of rock are sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous and the differences among them have to do with how they are formed. Sedimentary rocks are formed from particles of sand, shells, pebbles, and other fragments of material. Together, all these particles are called sediment.

Sedimentary rocks

They are the site of very important resources such as ground water, coal, oil, and soil. Shale, sandstone, and limestone are the most common types of sedimentary rocks. They are formed by the most common mineral that is found on or near the surface of the Earth.
