Describe james mill periodisation of indian history.why was it unacceptable to the historiansof independent india?on what basis have they periodised indian history?
Answers
Answer :
James mill divided Indian history into Hinduism and Muslim and British periods.
This periodisation is based on the religious line that there was a face for which the Hindu were the rulers and other work ruled.
Then came the face of the Muslims and Britishers i.e. Christians. He had a colonial mind and thought asians to have poorly civilized. He felt Europeans to be superior.
So , infact, through this periodisation he tried to divide the people with their own specific identity which was not a correct.
During the Muslim and British they were were thousands of Hindu and Muslim princely states.
So , this is not a proper periodisation of Indian history.

Concept:
Scottish economist and political philosopher James Mill released his mammoth three-volume opus A History of British India in 1817. He split Indian history into the Hindu, Muslim, and British eras in this. This periodization gained widespread acceptance.
Explanation:
- In the latter part of the nineteenth century, the periodization of pre-British India's history—more especially, its division between a "Hindu" period and a "Muslim" period—became entrenched.
- He divided Indian history into three periods—Hindu, Muslim and British. It has been argued by many historians that it is not correct to periodize Indian history on the basis of religion of the rulers.
- For instance, several different religions coexisted harmoniously in ancient India throughout the time of the Hindu monarchs. The same can be said for mediaeval India.
- It was incorrect to categorize mediaeval India as Muslim history because there were people of other faiths living there at the time.
- Such periodization, which was founded on the religion of the ruling class, implies that other people's lives, customs, and cultures are unimportant.
