Layer test is carried out by adding Carbon Disulphide, in the presence of dilute Hydrochloric Acid, to the given solution. In case bromine is present, it will give an orange layer, whereas it will give a violet layer in the case iodine.

Layer’s test is a test that is used to detect in the presence of ‘bromide’ and ‘iodide ions’.

The Layer’s test is done using ‘Carbon disulphide’ in the presence of ‘dilute hydrochloric acid’. This gives an orange layer in the ‘presence of bromide ions’ whereas a ‘violet layer is formed’ in the ‘presence of iodide ions’.

Layer’s test is a confirmatory test to detect the ‘presence of halogens’ in a mixture.
