NH3 is synthesized by reacting N2 from the air with H2 from natural gas at high P and T using the Haber's reaction. Anhydrous NH3 can be stored as a liquid under pressure. Sometimes, it's converted to other types of fertilizers.
As a first step, HNO3 can be produced by mixing NH3 and air in a tank followed by the absorption of the NO gas in H2O. Conc. HNO3 and NH3 gas are then mixed together in a tank and a neutralization reaction occured synthesizing NH4NO3.
Another important nitrogen-based fertilizer is the NH2-CO-NH2, which is synthesized by a reaction of NH3 with CO2 at high pressure. Both ammonium nitrate and urea can be further concentrated and converted into a solid form.
The flow diagram is given in an image below.
