Molluscans are very diverse animals and form an important part of the ecosystem in the world. Some animals that you are familiar with like snails, octopuses, squids, oysters, clams etc. all belong to Phylum Mollusca. Did you know that Molluscs with shells can produce pearls? Some of these are also eaten by humans in different regions of the world. Let us educate ourselves about this phylum of the Animal Kingdom.

Mollusca is the 2nd largest phylum of invertebrate animals. The members are known as Molluscs or Mollusks. Around 85000 extant species of molluscs are recognized. The number of fossil species is estimated between 60000 and 100000 additional species.

Kingdom : Animalia
Superphylum : Lophotrochozoa
Phylum : Mollusca

Molluscs are the largest marine Phylum., comprising about 23% of all the named marine organisms. Numerous molluscs also live in fresh water and terristial habitats. They are highly diverse , not just in size and in anatomical structure, but also in behavior and in habitat. The Phylum is divided into 8 or 9 taxonomic classes, of which two are entirely extinct. Cephalopod molluscs , such as squid, cuttlefish, and octopus. are among the most neurologically advanced of all invertebrates-and either the giant squid and the colossal squid is the largest known invertebrate species. The gastropods are by far the most numerous molluscs and account for 80% of the total classified species.
