Poverty Trends In India Since 1973

  • Poverty in India is tallied by the sum of the population living below the poverty line (BPL). A person that earns lesser than the minimum tallied value of poverty is considered to be poor. The minimum number is different for rural and urban areas.

  • In 1973 the poverty ratio was 55% which had substantially been reduced to 36% in 1993 and later further to 26% in 2000.

  • The poverty ratio has been decreasing with every passing year since Independence. This ratio is said to be decreased to 22% as per the Census in 2011 and will most probably decrease even more fortunately in the coming years.

  • The latest estimation implies a substantial reduction in the number of poor to nearly three hundred million.
