we have to describe shape, geometry and hybridization of the following according to VSEPR theory.

(a) NH₃ (b) ClF₃ (c) SF₄

solution : (A) NH₃

no of bond pairs = 3

no of lone pairs = (5 + 3 - 2 × 3)/2 = 1

3 bp's and 1 lp so it is sp³ hybridized but the geometry of it is trigonal pyramidal and shape is tetrahedral.

(B) ClF₃

no of bond pairs = 3

no of lone pairs = (7 + 3 × 7 - 3 × 8)/2 = 2

3 bp's and 2 lp's so the hybridization of ClF₃ is sp³d and geometry is T - shaped. and shape is trigonal bipyramidal.

(c) SF₄

no of bond pairs = 4

no of lone pairs = (6 + 4 × 7 - 4 × 8)/2 = 1

4 bp's and 1 lp so the hybridization of SF₄ is sp³d and geometry of it is see-saw but the shape is trigonal bipyramidal.
