Soil erosion and deforestation can be checked through the following measures:

  1. Terrace Farming: This method of farming is used in hilly areas to prevent erosion due to running water. The steps control both the amount and speed of the water, thus reducing soil erosion to a great extent.
  2. Contour Ploughing: It creates several small dams by planting crops on ridges. This slows down the water and allows better absorption by the soil.
  3. Shelter Belts: It includes planting several rows of trees, to reduce the flow of surface winds. This prevents and reduces soil erosion by the wind.
  4. Utilizing less paper: Demand for paper has been increasing per year which puts more and more pressure on the forests to provide wood necessary for paper production.
  5. Consume recycled products: Daily items like paper bags, books, toilet paper made from recycled paper should be used.  Consciously making this decision, lowers the demand for timber in the market.
