The unstable political situation in India during the middle of the 18th century between the European companies left two important rivals in India in the form of English and the French East India Companies in bitter conflict.


It was not confined only to trade but it assumed political angle too.Madras and Pondicherry were the chief trading centres for the English and French respectively on the Coromandel Coast.


The English and the French took support on different groups/parties in the region and take opposite stand on various issues.


The Anglo-French struggle in India began in the coastal areas north and south of Madras then known as the Carnatic.The Anglo-French rivalry spanned in the form of three Carnatic Wars between 1740 and 1763 in Southern India.


These wars resulted in establishment of political supremacy of British East India Company. The French company was reduced in the areas around Pondicherry
