Alphonse Daudet's ''The Last Lesson'' is set during the Franco - Prussian war (1870-71). France was defeated by Prussia (Germany) and the German language was imposed in the French districts of Alsace and Lorraine. The last lesson describes the feelings of a French teacher M. Hamel /and his student Franz, when they get to know this.
