Insect wings are adult outgrowths of the insect exoskeleton that enable insects to fly. They are found on the second and third thoracic segments (the mesothorax and metathorax), and the two pairs are often referred to as the forewings and hindwings, respectively, though a few insects lack hindwings, even rudiments.

1. Membranous: e.g. Dragons Fly Honeybee and Termites: Wings are thin and transparent.

The insect thorax has three segments: the prothorax, mesothorax, and metathorax

.The third, the posterior, thoracic segment, abutting the abdomen, is the metathorax

which bears the third pair of legs and the posterior wings.

Each segment is dilineated by an intersegmental suture. Each segment has four basic regions.
