The Blue Rebellion started in March 1859, when the Indian farmers in Bengal caused riots against growing and cultivating the indigo plants. These farmers beat up the planters and attacked the indigo factories.
After the Blue Rebellion, the planters moved to Bihar for work as the production of indigo had collapsed in Bengal.
After Gandhi had returned from South Africa, he visited Champaran in Bihar in 1917 and experimented in Champaran for the first time with his Satyagraha movement. This was called as the Champaran movement and it successfully freed the farmers from the oppressive cultivation of indigo.
