Sher Singh's father and other elders were away when his younger brother Kunwar fell seriously ill. As his mother had to look after the cattle and the house the job of taking his younger brother to the hospital in Kalaghat was entrusted to him.
He began the journey in the evening, carrying his brother in a sling. Kalaghat was about 50 miles away. He took a short cut through the jungle. With his jungle sense he escaped from stepping on a cobra.
When he reached the river bed and was taking rest, he saw a herd of elephants jostling through the forest. But luckily the herd did not harm the brothers. He lifted his brother with great effort and trod into the shallow river. He saw newly made footprints of a tiger on the shore.
He proceeded courageously and reached the second river by midnight. The river was full and the Kutcha Bridge had submerged. He weaved some grass into a rope and tied it around his brother and himself so that they could remain together. Then he entered the river and moved forward with great difficulty. It was an enormous struggle to carry the weight of his brother and move through the cold and strong current in the river. In this way he reached the road to Kalaghat with great difficulty.
Then he got a lift in a bullock cart and a truck and reached the hospital and admitted his brother. After that he got some work in the rail yards and earned some money to get a few things to cook a meal.
The doctor, at the hospital was amazed that Sher Singh was the boy who brought the sickly Kunwar from Laidwani. He called him 'Sher Singh Bahadur'.
