Despite the fatct that India has attained progress in many fields, poverty reduction remains India's most compelling

challenge as

(1) The progress attained is in fields that are very limited and the masses, which encompasses a huge section of the society that is below the poverty line, are either ignorant of it or do not benefit from this progress.

(2) Corruption prevalent in the country makes it extremely hard for the benefits received, from the progress attained, to reach the poor and needy. The benefits circulate among the upper echelons of the society and the poor remains poor.

(3) Illiteracy and uneducation prevents the poor from knowing their rights and striving to improve their living conditions. Ignorance, also prevents the well to do people from acknowledging the rights of the poor to a better life and prevent them from helping the poor in their betterment.

In 2012, the Indian government stated 22% of its population is below its official poverty limit. The World Bank, in 2011 based on 2005's PPPs International Comparison Program, estimated 23.6% of Indian population, or about 276 million people, lived below $1.25 per day on purchasing power parity.
