We know very little about Johannes Gutenberg's personality. Most of what we know about him is based on business disputes, and on tax and legal records. Even basic facts like the year of his birth are missing.
Gutenberg was born in Mainz, Germany, probably around 1397-1400, the youngest son of a well-off merchant. His family was forced to leave Mainz in 1411, and settled in Eltville am Rhein. He may have attended the University of Erfurt. He is involved in a court case in 1436-37 accused of breaking a promise of marriage. He appears to have invented movable type by 1440. He prints his famous Bible in 1455. In 1456, Johannes Fust, his business partner, accuses him of misusing funds, and is awarded control of the print shop. He continues to operate another shop, however. By 1465, Gutenberg's achievements was recognized and he given a title and stipend for his achievements. He died in 1465.
According to E.M. Hanebutt-Benz: "Since 1540 the centennial of the invention of the art of printing has been observed. Gutenberg as the father of this invention however, has only been celebrated since the French Revolution."
Here is Hanebutt-Benz's account of what is known about Johannes Gutenberg, published by the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz, Germany:
