A brief character sketch of Kapila in Hayavadana is written below:

  • Kapila is a strong, dark man who is the brawn to Devadatta's brains. He is the son of an ironsmith.
  • He is a brave man with a strong sense of adventure and great daring. He is a much better friend than Devadatta gives him credit for; even though it is obvious to him that the two are not a good match, he speaks to Padmini on the friend's behalf.
  • When he discovers Devadatta's body with his head severed, he also cuts off his own head in solidarity with him.
  • Kapila retreats into the forest and from society when Padmini decides to stay with Devadatta's head on Kapila's body.
  • His fitness and physique gradually return, but he soon realizes that this is only a hollow, half-existence. He and Devadatta end their lives deliberately at the end.
