Montmorency was a very mischeivous dog and would always get in the way, his ambition as explained is to get in the way and get sworn at by george and  harris. He got into the basket and dipped his leg in the jam and then whenever george or harris decide to take something out of the basket they would only feel his wet damp nose in the way and then montmorency jumped out before harris could land him with a Frying pan.
