Name of the play : Merchant of Venice
Name of the character : Portia
________________________________________
Portia is a smart, beautiful, intelligent, quite romantic heroine of the play who at the stating seems as bounded by his fathers will and therefore can not do anything related to his future husband and at the situation curbing her own.Unlike all heroines she is not simply an object of love, but is a person with mind of her own.At starting she is melancholic due to the casket obstacles laid down by her father and is anxious to have a befitting man.She is shown as a dutiful daughter.
When she gets a man as a husband of his own choice that is the Bassanio as he chooses the correct casket she emerges as a true lover and takes the center stage of the play. She not only sends Bassanio to Venice for saving Antonio but she herself cross dress as a lawyer and go to the court of Venice for saving Antonio. And in conclusion with the help of his intelligence and sharp mind she saves Antonio.
Like most Shakespearean heroine in the comedies.Portia's role was passive in the first of the play but in the second part she takes the lead role and moves the plot by determining the course of the play.
