Bengal contributed a major part in the upliftment of women. Vidyadagar worked for the education of women. He realised that there could not be emancipation of women, if they remained uneducated. He helped Drinkwater Bethune in the establishment of the Hindu Female School in 1849. The school was named Bethune Female School and Vidyasagar remained the Honorary secretary of the school till 1869.Lord Bentinck, the first Governor-General of India declared the practice of Sari illegal and punishable by the criminal courts in 1829. The students of Derozio were also against Sati. Under the inspiration of Derozio, his students published several magazines and in those magazines several topics were dealt with like female education, science of politics, etc. Even, when strengthened by the movement for legalising the remarriage of Widows, the British government in India finally passed the Act XV (Hindu Widow Remarriage Act) on 26 July 1856. Many educated classes of Bengal protested against the wrong illogical illegal practices that were going on with the women at that time. Ultimately, women were given importance and it is noticed that women are more sincere in duties and responsibilities than men.
