Philosophers made people realize that the divine right of kings isn't exactly true, and that humans did indeed have three unalienable rights, which are life, liberty and property, or the pursuit of happiness. While there were different philosophies, ones from the likes of Enlightenment thinkers such as John Locke took a heavy toll on France. Because of this, beginning with the Estates General, which the King limited the power of the Third Estate, thus causing them to take the Tennis court Oath and establishing their own legislature of sorts.

Long story short, it made people realize that they could overthrow their governments if it were necessary

Hope it helps.
