Describe the contributions of Dwarkanath Tagore as an entrepreneur of Bengal.

ANSWER::


(i) Dwarkanath Tagore believed that India would develop through westernization and industrialization.

(ii) He invested in shipping, shipbuilding, mining, banking, plantations and insurance.

(iii) Dwarkanath Tagore made his fortune in China trade before he turned to industrial investment, setting up six Joint Stock Companies in the 1830s and 1840s.

OR  

The very first section of the underground railway in London started on 10th January, 1863.

It helped to solve the housing problem in the following ways :  

(a) The population in the city became more dispersed.

(b) Better planned suburbs were developed.  

(c) A good railway network enabled large number of people to live outside Central London and travelled to work.

London Underground Railway :

The London Underground was proposed by Charles Pearson in the year 1843. After 10 years of discussion in the Parliament authorized its construction. Work on the metropolitan began in 1930 and on Jan 10, 1863 the line was opened.

The underground tunnels were built deeper such that they don't disturb the foundations of buildings, public utility works and street traffic. Hence, it saved a larger area and housing problem was resolved.

Contributions of Dwarkanath Tagore :

1. In partnership with British traders, he set up a commercial ventures like shipping, banking and insurance.

2. In 1829, he founded Union Bank in Calcutta.

3. He helped in setting up the first Anglo-Indian managing agency - industrial organizations that ran jute mills, tea plantations, coal mines etc.

4. His company managed huge zamindari estates.
