Description of the cotton textile industry in India:

Western region:

  • Out of the 12 major cotton-producing states, Gujarat contributes the most to the entire cotton production of the country.
  • In the western region, Gujarat is followed by Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana in the respective order.
  • Owing to the production of cotton in the region, there is an abundance of textile industries in Mumbai and Ahmedabad which convert raw cotton into fabric.
  • Cottonseed oil industries are also found in a great number in the western region.

Eastern region:

  • The emergence of modern textile mills in India began with the establishment of the first mechanized textile mill in Kolkata (West Bengal) in 1818.
  • The cotton industry in the eastern region is comparatively less labor-intensive.
  • The fabric produced from the cotton grown in the eastern region is more in demand internationally.
  • The number of cotton varieties grown in the eastern region is less than the western region.
