This question is from the short story, 'The Portrait of a lady' by Khushwant Singh.

The grandmother used to feed the sparows daily but when she died, the sparrows didn't touch the breads thrown in front of them. The sparrows took no notice of the breads thrown to them by Khushwant's mother. They sat around the grandmother in thousands and when the dead body of the grandmother was being carried away, they flew away silently.

In this story, the author has describes his grandmother as a very religious lady and along with sharing the memories of his childhood with his grandmother, he has also described the last moments of his grandmother.
