The Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, of a magnitude of 9, occured in north-eastern Japan on 11th of March, 2011. An earthquake occurring at Honshu, an island, caused a series of large tsunami waves to sweep through northeastern Japan. This earthquake was the most powerful earthquake recorded in Japan ever. The tsunami waves swept through more than 500 square kilometres. About 20,000 people lost their lives and close to 500,000 people had been forced to evacuate. The cost of all the lives lost and property damaged added up to a whopping 360 billion dollars.
