Diagonal relationship between Lithium and Magnesium with the help of two illustrative properties are as follow:--

1】Both hydroxides that is lithium hydroxide LiOH and magnesium hydroxide Mg(OH)2 both are weak base while other hydroxides of alkali metals and alkali earth metals are strong bases.

2】Due to their small size and their appreciable covalent nature hallides of lithium and magnesium are soluble in organic solvents.

3】Both lithium and magnesium form hydrates and has water of crystalization whereas other metals

do not form hydrates.example of hydrates of lithium is LiCl.H2O and that of magnesium is MGCl2.2H2O

4】Carbonates and hydroxides as well as nitrates of both lithium and magnesium decompose on heating.
