Anyone who had seen Mc Leery enter the prison would have wondered at the differences in Mc Leery who came out of Evan’s cell after the examination. Put simply, there were marked differences between the Mc Leery who had entered Evans’s cell and the Mc Leery who had come out of his cell after the exam. As Stephen escorted him to the gate, Mc Leery was looking slimmer and a little shorter. His Scots accent was broader. But no one paid much attention to these differences.
