After 1601, when British East India company wanted to explore India, the major trading was from Portugal.

This company was based in Bombay, Cochin and tried exploring Daman Diu.

England and Portugal had treaties of friendship and peace from 1496.

There was an agreement that British East India company will not encroach on the interests of the Portuguese.

They chose Calcutta as natural harbor and the company set Calcutta as the headquarters.
