Functions of Membrane Proteins:

1. Carrier molecule (Permeases): These bind with specific molecules and transport them into or out of the cell or cell organelles. This ensures selective exchange of materials within or outside the cell.

2. Receptor molecules:

 Some trans-membrane proteins recognize and bind to specific molecules (hormones, neurotransmitters or other chemicals) present in cell's surroundings.

 Cell surface receptors on egg and sperm of same species recognize and bind to each other for fertilization.

3. Enzyme molecules: Inner mitochondrial membrane carries enzymes comprising electron transport chain (ETC) for respiration.
