Anne describes a 'food cycle' as a period when the inmates have only one particular dish or type of vegetable to eat. During almost two years that they have spent in the annex, they have been through a number of food cycles.
Sometimes they have eaten a plant called endive, sometimes only spinach ,tomatoes or cabbage and so on. Managing food was a major concern for the people of the Annex. It happened many times that their helpers were not able to provide them adequately and they had to resort to second grade food. The annex residents became very angry at the lack of food supplies. Anne mentions that sometimes that had to eat old food which smelt very bad and made her sick. Anne describes this situation in detail because she wants to highlight the fact that due to the war, the food situation became really bad and vegetables were available rarely. They had to eat whatever was available at a particular time and this applied not only to the people hiding in the annex, but also to the people in general all across Europe.
