The Deccan Traps formed between 60 and 68 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous period. The bulk of the volcanic eruption occurred at the Western Ghats (near Mumbai) some 66 million years ago.The Eastern and Western Ghats meet at the southern end of the plateau, forming one corner of the triangle. On the north, the Deccan plateau stops at the Satpura Range of hills. The Deccan plateau is about 2,000 feet above sea level, so it's pretty high up.
