French Society in late 18th century :- In late eighteenth century France was divided into three groups called estates :-
First Estate :- It consist of clergymen and church - father who were custodians of religion and conscience of man . They were most venerated persons .
Second Estate :- It consist of land lord , men of noble birth and aristocrats .
Third Estate :- It consisted of vast majority of common masses which include landless peasant , petty peasant , artisans , masons , craftsmen , manufacturer , traders , merchant , and other businessman .

Wars and economic crisis :- In 1774 when Louis XVI ascended the throne he found an empty treasure . The nation had gone into deep debt because of fighting in the seven year war ( 1756 - 1763 ) and revolutionary War in America under Louis XVI .
Excessive Taxation :- Before revolution , the common people were groaning under the burden of heavy taxes . The system of taxation was unjust and unreasonable .
Rise of middle class :- In 18th century witnessed the emergence of social groups termed as middle class . the middle class become the leader of revolution . They came forward with the slogan of Liberty , equality and fraternity .
The struggle to survive :- the population of France Rose from about 23 million in 1715 to 28 million in 1789 . This led to a rapid increase in demand for food grain . Due to low production supply of grain could not keep pace with the demand . So price of bread which was the staple diet of majority Rose rapidly .
