A neuron is often referred to as the nerve cell and carries nerve impulses from one part of body to other. It is the basic building block of the nervous system in vertebrates. They carry electrical impulses through the help of their specialized structures.
A neuron in vertebrates generally humans consist of four major regions with several functions associated with them.
1. A cell body - is the enlarged portion of the neuron and is covered by a cell membrane. It contains the nucleus and the mitochondria and other organelles.
2. Dendrite - are thin cytoplasmic extensions of the body that receive information in the cell body.
2. Axon - are also thin cytoplasmic extension but they carry information away from the cell body.
4. Synaptic terminals - are formed at the ends of those axons which divide and re-divide during electrochemical process.
