Tartary is an imaginary land in the poem ‘Tartary’ by Walter John de la Mare (1873 – 1958) an English poet and story writer.

The poet describes Tartary as a land of immense riches. People wore expensive dresses and every house had golden thrones to sit on and beds made of ivory. It was a land of beautiful lakes and valleys. Peacocks and tigers thrived in the lush green forests of Tartary and the pools are filled with large fishes.

The land is lit up by bright lights in the evening and the air is filled with sweet music from harps, flutes and mandolins.
