lichens occures one of the four basic growth forms , as follows :

  1. crustose - crustlike, growing tight against the substrate.
  2. squamulose - tightly clustered and slightly flattened like pebbles.
  3. folious - leaflike, with flat sheets of tissue not tightly bound .
  4. fruticose - free standing, branching tubes
