India was very rich in ancient times because of it's exceptional handicrafts and market of goods even in foreign .india was also very rich in spices and raw material.this created jealous to British government and because of their political power they started forcing artisans , marketians and farmers to sell their good at very low price or they take their service as tax. this created a major problem for Indians as they didn't earn profit and suffered loss. this is the historical cause of poverty in India.

Answer:
The major reasons for poverty in India are casteism, belief in untouchability, rituals and customs, traditions and reservedness. Hence, the poor are forced to certain labour oriented works. Since the work is less productive they receive low wages. Thus, social backwardness is the major cause of economic backwardness.
