They make up many parts of a food chain. Most are free living and are primary consumers. Some are parasites and can be secondary and tertiary consumers depending on whom they parasitize. None are producers since they are heterotrophic. Some live in a helpful symbiotic relationship with other organisms like algae (corals), and in the gut of termites (trypanosomes) that allow them to digest cellulose.
