Indigo revolt was the revolt started by indigo planters in Bengal in 1859. Indigo plantation goes back to 1777. Indigo planters persuaded the peasants to grow indigo and even granted them loans to grow indigo. These loans were provided at very high interest rates which made it impossible for the peasants to clear as the indigo was purchased at a mere 2.5% of the market rate. Huge loans and severe oppression to grow indigo lead to revolt by some of the farmers.

The revolt began in Krishnanagar, West Bengal and rapidly moved to other places such as Murshidabad, Pabna, Narali, etc.

British tried to suppress the revolt. They ruthlessly slaughtered many peasants. A large section of West Bengal came together to support the peasants including zamindars, the Bengali middle class family and many popular leaders.
