The phase of cricket after 1970s is referred to as the post-packer cricket. This era derives its name fromKerry Packer, an Australian television tycoon who introduced several innovations in the practice of cricket. He realised that cricket was a money- making sport. He signed up fifty-one of the world’s leading cricketers against the wishes of the national cricket boards and for about two years staged unofficial Tests and One-Day internationals under the name of World Series Cricket described as ‘circus’. The television coverage changed the nature of cricket . Some of the important changes introduced by him are as follows:
Coloured dress
Protective helmets
Fielding restrictions
Day-night matches played under floodlights
Televised coverage and marketing
