A crescograph is a device that measures plant growth.

What is Crescograph:

  • Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose invented it in the early twentieth century. The Bose crescograph records the movement of a plant's tip using a system of clockwork gears and a smoked glass plate (or its roots).

  • Through the use of two distinct levers, it was able to record at magnifications of up to 10,000 times. One lever records at a magnification of 100 times, while the other lever takes that image and records at a magnification of 100 times.

  • Marks are made on the plate every few seconds to show how the rate of development changes in response to different stimuli. Temperature, chemicals, gases, and electricity were all used in Bose's experiments.
