The Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of Ind lists the official languages of the Republic of India. At the time when the Constitution was enacted, inclusion in this list meant that the language was entitled to representation on the Official languages commission, and that the language would be one of the bases that would be drawn upon to enrich Hindi, the official language of the Union.

There are 22 scheduled languages in the eighth schedule of the Constitution of India.

Hindi and English are used for official purposes in India. Though the use of English was to be discontinued in the 1960s, the South Indian states demanded that it remain an official language. The promotion of Hindi continues to be the policy of the government.
